Check your sons' bedrooms for knives, says father of boy stabbed at Facebook party

Jay Whiston, 17, an A-level student, was stabbed in the stomach when a quiet house party in an affluent suburb spiralled out of control.
Other partygoers said he was killed protecting friends from a number of gatecrashers that had descended on the £450,000 home after the party was posted on social media sites.

Some reports said that there had been a row over mobile phones and Jay stepped in to defend younger members of the party.

Today his tearful father Stafford, a pawnbroker, laid a bouquet of flowers at the scene in Colchester, Essex, and warned other parents of the dangers of knives.

"Every mother and father should check their sons' rooms and clothes," said the 41-year-old.

"Anything they can do to prevent another tragedy is so important.
Mr Whiston said that his son, who was said to have been killed protecting others in a row over phones, was a "hero".

"He was my hero," said the businesman.
"If you could pick any son you would pick him. No one should ever have to go through this.
"When did kids in nice places like this start carrying knives?"
Jay's uncle Clifford Hill, 52, had flown over from his home in Tampa, Florida, to comfort his grieving sister Caroline.
"These kids carrying knives have got to stop," he said.
"It just ruins decent people's lives. He was a great kid, always someone that would send you a birthday card.
"Everybody loved him. The word tragedy doesn't do it justice. It is just awful.
"They should throw away the key for the people that did it. I just hope that you can get something good out of it.
"I am 52. We have never, ever had anything like this happen to our family.
"When crimes like this touch normal people like us you know that something has to be done about it.
"I just hope that something good can come from this."
Meanwhile a fourth arrest has been made by detectives investigating the murder of the teenager from Clacton, Essex.
Essex Police had already made three arrests following the horrific attack at 10pm on Saturday night.
Now a fourth person - a 17-year-old from Colchester- has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody this morning.
A spokesman said it was wrong to blame Facebook for the attack.
"It is not Facebook that is to blame, it is the people who turned up at the party."
