X Factor is facing a crisis after viewing figures hit an eight-year low with the show being trounced in the ratings war by Strictly Come Dancing.
An average of just 7.6 million viewers tuned in for X Factor on Saturday, the lowest figure of the series and the worst for this stage of the competition since the first series in 2004.
Strictly peaked at 10.8 million with an average of 10 million, more than two million ahead – the biggest lead over X Factor in six years. A source said the show’s creator Simon Cowell would be urgently speaking to show executives over the next few days to form an urgent plan to “stop the rot”.
The average audience has fallen by four million compared to this stage two years ago, the last series to feature Cowell as a judge.
An insider added: “There will be crisis meetings this week and Simon will be involved because things have got desperate.
“Simon always wants to be number one, but X Factor is not just second, it’s a long way behind. It’s never been this bad and Simon and those he has left in charge will be hurting.
“The only way of getting things back might be for Simon to return and save the day, but he has got his hands full in America.”
X Factor has a year to go on its contract with ITV so any drop in ratings could affect how much money Cowell and his company Syco will be given to make future series.
An X Factor spokesman said that including people watching recorded versions of the show the average audience was still 10.2 million.
The bad news comes after Lucy Spraggan, one of the brightest performers, quit the contest on Saturday because of illness.
In last night’s show Kye Sones was kicked out after a sing-off with Rylan Clark.
Kye’s mentor Gary Barlow said: “When you have an act like Rylan good singers go home. The sing-offs have been crazy this year.”

Polly's verdict: Why Louis still sits in judgment
The Only Possible Reasons Louis Walsh Is Still An X Factor Judge:
1. Simon Cowell is in love with him.
2. Louis knows where the bodies are buried, because Simon is secretly history’s most prolific serial killer
3. Simon had all his employees tested and Louis is a perfect medical match to donate organs to save his life
4. Louis is Simon’s real father.
5. Simon is Louis’ real father.
6. Louis is a genie, who granted Simon’s wish to be the most successful, rich, TV star in the world, but if Louis is sacked, he takes all Simon’s powers with him.
Bye Kye. Another controversial but correct decision, made by the voting public.
I’d feel sorry for Gary if I wasn’t still miffed that he got rid of Jade.
Baloney out next please.
