Guests are being invited to spend the night in cells from the notorious Alcatraz prison - after they were reproduced as a hotel in London.
Hotel Alcatraz features four rooms - or cells - modelled on those at
the famous penitentiary on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, which
closed in 1963 having housed Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and
“Birdman of Alcatraz” Robert Stroud.
Each has been meticulously designed and includes original materials from the prison, which are on loan from the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.
Former Alcatraz Correction Officer George DeVincenzi will also be on hand to usher guests to their cells and keep order among the inmates.
The 5ft by 9ft cells contain a single bed, wash basin, toilet and fold-down desk.
The hotel will be staffed by a team of “prison wardens” who have been trained specifically to authenticate the experience for guests.
The “regime” includes check-in at 6.30pm, when guests will be given prison-issue uniforms and have their mugshots.
They will be fed and watered while in their cells and are given a number of tasks - including physical exercise, model making and tailoring - that will help them to understand the lives of inmates caged on The Rock during the 1950s and 60s.
Hotel Alcatraz has been built inside a building in Field Street, Kings Cross, and will only be open for four nights from tomorrow (March 13) to Saturday.
It has been built to coincide with the launch of J J Abrams’ new drama series Alcatraz, which makes its UK debut on Watch.
Steve Hornsey, general manager of the channel, said: “We’re really excited at the prospect of throwing open the doors of Hotel Alcatraz. It offers people a unique opportunity to experience America’s most infamous prison and we can’t wait to see and hear the guest’s reactions.”
The rooms will be available free of charge through Laterooms.com on a first-come first-served basis by logging on to tinyurl.com/LRAlcatraz. Alcatraz is on Watch on Tuesdays at 9pm.
