The new iPad features a much higher resolution screen that Apple calls Retina Display and a five megapixel camera.
The device, also known as the iPad 3, costs £399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model and £659 for the 64GB Wi-Fi 4G version, although the ultra-fast data service is currently not available in the UK.
Zohaib Ali, 21, from Uxbridge, north-west London, was among the first outside the flagship Apple store in Regent Street five days ago.
'The iPad is the best product of the year and there won't be any more until 2013 so I am happy to queue,' he said.
'I love Apple products.'
Mr Ali has autism and his mother Rahat Ali believes Apple has helped him with his disability.
'Apple products are very good for autism,' she said.
'They are very easy to use and he is relaxed when he is using them. Usually he doesn't want to go out in a crowd but he is very happy queuing here.'
