The British comedian was charged with two counts of misdemeanour criminal damage to property after turning himself into police custody yesterday afternoon.
According to US website TMZ, The New Orleans Police Department issued a warrant for his arrest after Russell snatched a paparazzo's mobile phone and launched it into the window of a law firm as he was walking down a street in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Monday.
The 36-year-old star was released on a $5,000 bond.
Damages to the law firm's window totalled to nearly $250, and he reportedly sent a production assistant to drop off the money for the window's repair.
Russell's representatives are yet to comment on the matter.
However, the star did take to Twitter earlier this week to put his opinion on the event across.
"Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory (sic)," he wrote.
Russell - who was in New Orleans shooting a new film - has hit headlines of late after splitting from estranged wife Katy Perry at the end of last year.
